Abstract

There is a wide diversity of opinion as to which etiologic factors should be regarded as causative for the T. M. J. dysfunction syndrome, but psychological aspects should be
considered as the main causative factors or at least an important cofactor explaining the T. A J. symptoms.
Therefore, to investigate the psychological aspects of the patients with T. M. J. dysfunction, the author studied the correlation of psychological symptoms between the T. M. J. dysfunction group (20 male and 41 female) who sought treatment for T. M. J. dysfunction and the control group(20 male and 41 female) without T. NI. J. dysfunction who required the other dentai treatment with the same age range and sex using SCL-U
MPD.
The obtained results were as follows :
1. The dimensions of SOM., NEU., ANX., I-S., DEP. (P < 0.01) and HYPO., P-A. A-H. , 0-C. (P < 0.05) were increased significantly at the T. M. J. dysfunction group compared with the control gorup.
2. In the T. M. J. dysfunction group, the dimensions of DEP. (P < 0.01) and A-H., ANX. (P < 0.05). were increased significantly at the female group compared with the male group, and in the control gorup, the dimensions of ANX., I-P., P-A. (P ( 0.01) and DEP. (P < 0.05) were increased significantly at the female group compared with the male group.
3. At the comparison between same sex of each group, there was significant difference in the dimension of SOM., ANX. (P < 0.01) and NEU., HYPO., A-H., (P < 0.05) in the female group but there was no significant difference except the dimension of I-P (P < 0.05) in the male group.
4. With regard to rank of dimension, the T. M. J. group and the control group were followed by the rank of HYOP., NEU., I-S. and 0-C. , DEP., ANX., SOM., S-H. , PA.
